Green Roof & Urban Green Space – The Mall Athens

The green space functions as a welcoming and transitional area for visitors entering the shopping centre, enhancing the arrival experience and introducing a strong element of greenery within a demanding urban environment.
The design incorporated variable planting depths ranging from approximately 17 cm to 30 cm, allowing for both low-growing vegetation and larger plant elements. Larger plants were strategically positioned above structurally suitable areas of the roof slab to ensure safe load distribution.

This configuration ensures efficient drainage, long-term waterproofing protection and reliable plant performance under high wind exposure and heavy public use.
An automatic underground irrigation system was installed, connected via Wi-Fi, allowing remote monitoring and control for optimized water management and plant health.
The planting scheme consists of Mediterranean, wind-resistant species, carefully selected for durability and adaptation to exposed urban conditions.
